SAT Exam in Nepal: Fees, Test Dates, Registration and Complete Guide (2026)

If you are a Nepali student planning to study for a bachelor's degree in the USA or another top country abroad, the SAT is one of the most important tests you will take. It is accepted by thousands of universities worldwide and can also help you qualify for merit-based scholarships. A strong SAT score shows universities that you are ready for college-level study.

This guide covers everything Nepali students need to know about the SAT in 2026: the current exam fee in Nepal, upcoming test dates, how to register, the new digital format, how scoring works, which countries and universities accept SAT scores, how to prepare effectively, and how the SAT compares to other tests like IELTS, TOEFL, and GRE.

What is the SAT?

SAT stands for Scholastic Assessment Test. It is a standardized exam created and administered by the College Board, a not-for-profit organization based in the United States. The SAT is primarily used by US universities to evaluate whether students are academically ready for undergraduate study. It is also accepted by universities in Canada, the UK, Australia, Germany, Singapore, and over 85 countries worldwide.

The SAT does not test your ability to memorize textbook content. Instead, it measures your skills in reading comprehension, grammar, writing, and mathematical reasoning. These are the skills that universities expect you to use from day one of your undergraduate program.

The SAT is scored on a scale of 400 to 1600. There is no pass or fail. The score you need depends on the university you are applying to. Some universities require the SAT. Others are test-optional, meaning you can choose whether to submit a score. Even at test-optional universities, a strong SAT score can make your application more competitive.

SAT scores are valid for five years from the date of your test. This gives you flexibility to take the exam in Grade 11 and still use that score for applications in Grade 12 or even later.

Since March 2024, the SAT has moved to a fully digital format worldwide, including in Nepal. You take the test on a laptop or tablet using the Bluebook app provided by the College Board. There is no paper version of the SAT anymore.

If you are also required to prove English language proficiency for your visa or university application, you will need a separate test alongside the SAT. Read our guides on IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE to understand what is required.

Important: The SAT is Now Fully Digital (Digital SAT)

Since March 2024, all SAT tests globally, including in Nepal, are taken in the Digital SAT format. The paper-based SAT no longer exists. If you are preparing for the SAT in 2026, you are taking the Digital SAT. Any old preparation materials or practice books that reference long passages, a separate Reading section, or a Writing and Language section as they previously appeared are now outdated.

The key changes in the Digital SAT compared to the old paper SAT are:

  • Fully digital and adaptive. The test is taken on a laptop or tablet using the official Bluebook app. Once you begin, no internet connection is needed for the test to continue. If your connection drops mid-test, the app keeps running without any disruption.
  • Shorter test duration. The Digital SAT takes 2 hours and 14 minutes, down from 3 hours in the old format. There is an optional 10-minute break between the two sections.
  • Short passages throughout Reading and Writing. The old SAT had long reading passages with multiple questions. The Digital SAT has short passages of 25 to 150 words, each paired with a single question. This makes the reading section feel much more manageable.
  • Calculator allowed for the entire Math section. In the old format, there was a no-calculator Math section. In the Digital SAT, a built-in Desmos graphing calculator is available throughout the entire Math section. You can also bring your own approved calculator.
  • Adaptive testing across modules. Each section is split into two modules. Your performance in Module 1 determines how difficult Module 2 will be. This adaptive system allows the test to measure your ability more accurately in less time.
  • Essay section removed permanently. The optional SAT Essay was discontinued and is no longer part of any version of the SAT.
  • Faster results. Score reports are typically available within a few days of the test, compared to weeks in the old format.
  • Free navigation within each module. You can move between questions, flag them for review, and change your answers before the module timer ends. This was more restricted in the old format.

Digital SAT Exam Structure (2026)

The Digital SAT has two sections: Reading and Writing, and Math. Each section is divided into two timed modules. The total test takes 2 hours and 14 minutes, plus an optional 10-minute break between the two sections.

Section Modules Questions Time per Module Total Time Section Score What It Tests
Reading and Writing 2 54 questions 32 minutes 64 minutes 200 to 800 Reading comprehension, vocabulary in context, grammar, sentence structure, evidence-based reasoning. All questions are multiple choice, each based on a short passage.
Math 2 44 questions 35 minutes 70 minutes 200 to 800 Algebra, advanced math, data analysis, geometry, and trigonometry. About 75% multiple choice and 25% student-produced responses where you type in your own answer. Calculator allowed throughout.

Total score: The Digital SAT total score ranges from 400 to 1600, made up of the Reading and Writing score (200 to 800) and the Math score (200 to 800) added together.

How the adaptive format works: Each section has two modules. Module 1 has a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Based on how well you do in Module 1, the system selects the difficulty level for Module 2. If Module 1 goes well, you get a harder Module 2, which gives you the chance to score higher. If Module 1 is challenging, Module 2 will be slightly easier. This is normal and does not mean you have done poorly. Your final score reflects your overall performance across both modules.

No negative marking: You are not penalized for wrong answers. Always answer every question, even if you are not sure. A smart guess is always better than leaving a question blank.

SAT Exam Fee in Nepal (2026)

The total SAT exam fee for Nepali students in 2026 is USD 111, which is approximately NPR 14,800 to 15,500 depending on the exchange rate at the time of payment.

Fee Component USD Amount
Base SAT registration fee USD 68

  • Test center fee: A small number of test centers charge an additional USD 24 facility fee. Check when selecting your center during registration.

How to Pay from Nepal

Since the SAT is managed by the College Board in the USA, payment must be made in USD. Nepali students can pay using:

  • An international Visa or Mastercard credit or debit card
  • A dollar card issued by a Nepali bank (available from most major banks)
  • PayPal linked to an international card
  • Assistance from select local banks that help with College Board registration payments

If you do not have your own international card, a parent or family member's card can be used. Note that some banks may charge additional processing fees on top of the College Board fee. Factor this into your budget.

Tip: Register at least 5 to 6 weeks before your target test date to avoid the late registration fee and to secure a seat at your preferred test center in Kathmandu. Seats at popular centers fill up quickly.

When Should You Take the SAT?

Most students preparing for US university admission should aim to take the SAT for the first time in Grade 11. This gives you time to see your score, identify weak areas, and retake the test in Grade 12 if needed, well before your application deadlines. Aim to have your final SAT score ready at least 3 to 4 months before your target university's application deadline. Register 8 to 10 weeks in advance to secure your preferred test center slot.

There is no limit on how many times you can take the SAT. Many students improve significantly on their second or third attempt. Many universities also accept superscores, meaning they combine your highest Reading and Writing score from one attempt with your highest Math score from another. Taking the test more than once can work in your favor.

SAT Test Centers in Nepal

All SAT tests in Nepal are held in Kathmandu. As of 2026, the following centers have been used for SAT testing in Nepal:

  • Kathmandu International Study Center
  • Rato Bangala School
  • St. Xavier's School
  • Trinity International College
  • Ullens School

Test center availability can change each exam cycle. When you register on the College Board website, you will see which centers have available seats for your chosen date. Always verify your test center and address on your official admission ticket before exam day.

There are currently no SAT test centers outside Kathmandu. Students from Pokhara, Chitwan, Biratnagar, or other cities need to travel to Kathmandu to sit the exam.

Important: You must bring a valid passport on the day of your SAT exam. Expired passports are not accepted. Confirm your passport is valid well before you register so there is time to renew it if needed.

SAT Score Requirements for Top Universities

The SAT is scored from 400 to 1600. No university publishes an official minimum cutoff score. Instead, most universities share the average score or middle 80% range of their recently admitted students. These numbers give you a realistic target to aim for.

Superscoring note: Many universities practice superscoring, meaning they combine your highest Reading and Writing score from one sitting with your highest Math score from another. If you plan to take the SAT more than once, check whether your target university accepts superscores. This can significantly increase your effective score.

University Typical SAT Score Range Notes
MIT 1510 to 1580 Strong Math section performance is essential. Math 750 and above is expected for engineering applicants.
Harvard University 1490 to 1580 Reinstated SAT requirements for 2026 admissions. Middle 80% of admitted students score in this range.
Stanford University 1500 to 1570 One of the most selective universities globally. Profile, essays, and extracurriculars matter alongside score.
University of California, Berkeley 1310 to 1530 Range varies by major. Engineering and computer science programs are at the higher end.
New York University 1350 to 1530 Test-optional for some programs. A strong score helps for competitive programs like Stern Business School.
Top 20 US universities (general) 1400 to 1550 Scores above 1400 are considered competitive for most top 20 US programs.
Mid-range US universities 1030 to 1190 A wide range of good universities fall in this tier. Many are test-optional, but a score in this range still helps.

General Score Benchmarks for Nepali Students

Score Range What It Means
1400 and above Competitive for top universities in the USA, UK, Canada, and other countries
1200 to 1399 Acceptable for many strong universities. Can qualify for merit scholarships at some programs.
1000 to 1199 Suitable for a wide range of universities, especially test-optional programs
Below 1000 Consider additional preparation and retaking the exam

Always check the official admissions page of each university you are applying to. Score requirements are updated each admission cycle and can vary significantly between programs within the same university.

If you are planning to pursue a Master's or MBA after your bachelor's degree, the SAT will not be relevant at that stage. Read our GRE guide and GMAT guide for postgraduate entrance tests.

Countries That Accept SAT Scores

More than 85 countries and over 4,000 universities worldwide accept SAT scores for undergraduate admissions. For Nepali students, this means your SAT score can open doors in multiple countries, not just the USA.

United States

The USA is the primary destination where the SAT is used. Almost all US universities consider SAT scores, and several top programs including Harvard, MIT, and Stanford have reinstated SAT requirements after a period of test-optional policies. A strong score also helps with merit scholarships. Read our Study in the USA from Nepal guide for more information.

Canada

Many Canadian universities accept SAT scores from international applicants, particularly for competitive programs. While not always required, a strong score can strengthen your application. Read our Study in Canada from Nepal guide.

United Kingdom

Several UK universities accept SAT scores for international students, especially for applicants whose high school qualifications differ from A-Levels. SAT scores can substitute for or complement other entry requirements. Read our Study in the UK from Nepal guide.

Australia

Top Australian universities including the Group of Eight accept SAT scores for international undergraduate admissions. Score requirements vary by institution and program. Read our Study in Australia from Nepal guide.

Germany

A number of German universities, especially those offering English-taught programs, accept the SAT. Minimum scores typically range from 1200 to 1400 depending on the program. Some universities also ask for an English proficiency test alongside SAT scores.

Netherlands

Universities such as the University of Amsterdam and Erasmus University Rotterdam accept SAT scores for international students applying to English-taught degree programs.

Singapore

The National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU) accept SAT scores from international students for undergraduate admissions.

Other Countries

SAT scores are also accepted by universities in Italy (Bocconi University), Switzerland (ETH Zurich), Turkey, South Korea, Japan, and several countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. The reach of the SAT continues to grow each year.

How to Prepare for the SAT

  • Start by taking a free full-length practice test on the official Bluebook app to get your baseline score across both sections. This tells you exactly where you stand and which areas need the most attention before you build any study plan.
  • Use official College Board materials and Khan Academy's free personalized SAT prep program. Khan Academy connects directly to your College Board account, analyzes your practice test results, and builds a study plan tailored to your weak areas. It is the most accurate free resource available.
  • Practice the digital format specifically. Because the SAT is adaptive and taken on a screen, practicing on paper is not enough. Use the Bluebook app to get comfortable with the interface, the built-in Desmos calculator, question flagging, and module navigation before your actual exam.
  • For Reading and Writing, most Nepali students find vocabulary in context and evidence-based reasoning the most challenging. Focus on reading a variety of English texts regularly, including science articles, social studies passages, and literary excerpts. The short passage format of the Digital SAT rewards careful, focused reading rather than speed.
  • For Math, the good news is that the Digital SAT does not test advanced mathematics. The content is at a secondary school level. Focus on algebra, word problems, and data interpretation. Use the built-in Desmos calculator strategically, but do not rely on it for basic calculations where mental math is faster.
  • Take at least two to three full-length timed practice tests before your actual exam date. Reviewing your mistakes after each practice test is more valuable than taking tests back to back without reflection.

How Long Does Preparation Take?

Most students need 3 to 6 months of focused preparation depending on their starting score and target. If you are aiming for a score above 1400, plan for at least 4 to 6 months of consistent daily practice. Students with a strong Math background often reach competitive Math scores faster and should invest more preparation time in Reading and Writing.

Average SAT Preparation Fees in Nepal

SAT coaching is available at many institutes and consultancies in Kathmandu. Fees typically range from NPR 20,000 to NPR 60,000 for a full preparation course depending on the institute, duration, and whether personalized coaching and mock tests are included. Self-study with official materials is a viable option for disciplined students, but structured coaching provides useful feedback on Reading and Writing skills that can be difficult to self-correct.

Quick Tips to Score Better on the SAT

  • Always answer every question. There is no negative marking on the SAT. A wrong answer costs you nothing but a blank answer guarantees zero points. If you are unsure, eliminate any clearly wrong options and make your best guess from the remaining choices.
  • Manage your time per question. In Reading and Writing you have about 1 minute and 10 seconds per question. In Math you have about 1 minute and 35 seconds per question. If a question is taking too long, flag it, move on, and return if time allows.
  • Use the built-in Desmos calculator wisely. The graphing calculator is powerful but using it for every question will slow you down. Reserve it for complex equations and data interpretation questions where it genuinely saves time.
  • Read each Reading and Writing question before the passage. Because each question is tied to a short passage, reading the question first tells you exactly what to look for. This saves time and keeps your focus sharp.
  • Do not panic if Module 2 seems harder. If you notice that Module 2 in a section feels more difficult than Module 1, it almost certainly means you performed well in Module 1. A harder Module 2 gives you access to higher scores. Stay calm and keep working through it.
  • Review flagged questions before submitting each module. You can freely navigate within each module. Use any remaining time to revisit questions you flagged rather than sitting idle.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Preparing with old paper SAT materials. Many preparation books and institutes in Nepal still use content designed for the pre-2024 paper SAT, which had long reading passages, a no-calculator Math section, and a separate Writing and Language section. If your preparation materials mention any of these, they are outdated and will not accurately reflect what you face on the Digital SAT. Always verify that the materials you use are updated for the Digital SAT format.
  • Skipping the digital practice experience. Students who only practice on paper are often surprised by the on-screen format, the adaptive module structure, and the built-in tools on actual test day. Spend meaningful time practicing inside the Bluebook app before your exam.
  • Registering too late. Test center seats in Kathmandu fill up quickly. Late registration also adds USD 34 to your cost. Register at least 5 to 6 weeks before your target date.
  • Not confirming passport validity. A valid passport is mandatory for the SAT at international test centers. Students who arrive with an expired passport are turned away and lose their registration fee. Check your passport well in advance.
  • Waiting for a perfect score before sending applications. Many universities have rolling admissions or early deadlines. Waiting too long to take the SAT in search of a higher score can cause you to miss important deadlines. Plan your test schedule relative to your application calendar from the start.
  • Ignoring superscoring policies. If your target university accepts superscores, your optimal strategy may be to take the SAT more than once and maximize each section separately. Not knowing this can lead you to retake the exam unnecessarily or submit a lower combined score.

SAT vs Other Tests

Nepali students often ask how the SAT compares to IELTS, TOEFL, GRE, and GMAT. Here is a clear comparison to help you understand which test you need and when.

Factor SAT IELTS / TOEFL / PTE GRE GMAT
Primary purpose Undergraduate admission (mainly USA and other countries) English language proficiency for visa and university admission at all levels Postgraduate admission (Master's, PhD programs) MBA and graduate management program admission
What it tests Reading comprehension, grammar, writing, and mathematical reasoning Listening, reading, writing, and speaking in English Verbal reasoning, quantitative reasoning, and analytical writing Quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, and data analysis
Test duration 2 hours 14 minutes 2 to 3 hours depending on test 1 hour 58 minutes 2 hours 15 minutes
Score range 400 to 1600 0 to 9 (IELTS), 0 to 120 (TOEFL), 10 to 90 (PTE) 260 to 340 (Verbal and Quant combined) 205 to 805
Do Nepali students typically need this? Yes, for undergraduate study in the USA and other countries that require it Yes, almost always required alongside the SAT for visa and university admission Yes, for Master's or PhD programs after completing a bachelor's degree Yes, for MBA programs after completing a bachelor's degree

An important point for Nepali students: the SAT does not replace the need for an English language test. Most US universities that require the SAT also ask international students to submit TOEFL or IELTS scores separately as proof of English language proficiency. These serve entirely different purposes in your application.

For more detail on English language tests, read our guides on IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the SAT exam fee in Nepal in 2026?

The total SAT exam fee in Nepal is USD 111, which includes the base registration fee of USD 68 plus an international fee of USD 43. This is approximately NPR 14,800 to 15,500 depending on the exchange rate. Additional fees apply for late registration, score reports, and rescheduling. Always confirm the current fee on the official College Board website before registering.

Where are the SAT test centers in Nepal?

All SAT test centers in Nepal are in Kathmandu. Known centers include Kathmandu International Study Center, Rato Bangala School, St. Xavier's School, Trinity International College, and Ullens School. Center availability changes each test cycle. Students from outside Kathmandu need to travel to the capital to sit the exam.

What is the difference between the old SAT and the Digital SAT?

The Digital SAT replaced the paper SAT entirely from March 2024. The main differences are: the test is now taken on a laptop or tablet using the Bluebook app; it is shorter at 2 hours and 14 minutes; it uses an adaptive module format; the Reading and Writing section now has short passages instead of long ones; the no-calculator Math section has been removed, with a built-in calculator available throughout; and the optional Essay has been permanently discontinued.

Do I need both the SAT and IELTS or TOEFL?

In most cases, yes. The SAT tests academic aptitude and reasoning ability. IELTS, TOEFL, and PTE test English language proficiency. They serve different purposes in your university application. Most US universities require both from non-native English speakers. Check each university's specific requirements, as policies vary.

How many times can I take the SAT?

There is no official limit on how many times you can take the SAT. There is also no waiting period required between attempts. Most students improve on their second or third attempt, especially after reviewing their score reports and targeting weak areas.

What is a good SAT score for Nepali students?

A score of 1200 or above is a reasonable starting target for most good universities. If you are targeting competitive US institutions, aim for 1400 or above. For elite programs at Harvard, MIT, and Stanford, scores of 1500 and above are typically expected. Your target score should be based on the specific universities you are applying to.

How long are SAT scores valid?

SAT scores are valid for five years from the date of your test. This means you can take the SAT in Grade 11 and still use that score for university applications in Grade 12 or beyond, as long as the score falls within the five-year window.

Is the SAT required for Canadian universities?

Many Canadian universities accept SAT scores from international applicants, especially for competitive programs. The SAT is not universally required in Canada the way it is at US universities, but submitting a strong score can strengthen your application, particularly at programs that regularly admit international students.
